About Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Trek

"Looking for something extra in the Khumbu region? Then join us on our Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes Trek 2022/2023. It's a fantastic trek full of adventure and jaw-dropping landscapes. You explore Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, EBC, Kala Patthar, and cross Cho La pass"

We have combined two adventurous trekking routes of the Khumbu region and have created this ultimate Gokyo lakes and Everest base camp itinerary. Following the dense forests of Sagarmatha National Park and trekking through fine mountain villages, we make our way to the stunning Gokyo Valley and then to Everest Base Camp.

Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes Trek is a bit more challenging than the usual EBC trek. Therefore, we recommend this trek to trekkers who have some sort of previous trekking experience. The trekking route is difficult and has many long ascents & descents. Leaving the bustling trail of the Khumbu region, you'll embark on a relatively less crowded route on the first half of the trek to reach Gokyo valley.

The trail ascends through Phortse Thanga (3,680 m) and Machherma (4,470 m) villages before reaching the beautiful Gokyo village (4,750 m), situated at the eastern shore of third Gokyo Lake, Dudh Pokhari. There are six main Gokyo Lakes that range from 4,700 meters to 5,000 meters. These lakes are the world's largest freshwater lake system and a designated Ramsar site.

Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes Trek 18 days cross the high Cho La pass (5,420 m) and join the main route to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). The trail goes along the lateral moraines of Khumbu Glacier to the lap of Mt. Everest. You then further ascend to Kala Patthar (5,644 m), following a steep rocky trail from Gorak Shep (5,164 m).

Kala Pattar offers a gorgeous sunrise and sensational mountain panorama of Mt. Everest (8,849 m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m), Mt. Nuptse (7,861 m), Mt. Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Mt. Makalu (8,463 m), Mt. Ama Dablam (6,812 m), Island Peak (6,160 m), Mt. Baruntse (7,162 m), Mt. Thamserku (6,608 m), etc. Likewise, you also get to see breathtaking mountain scenery from Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) and Gokyo Lakes. The entire trip offers heavenly landscapes.

It is a difficult trek. The trail is rough with numerous ascends and descends, which demands good physical fitness. The walking hour each day is 6 to 7. There are many steep, rugged parts along the way. You will be walking on glacial and snow paths too.

The trials cross dense forests, gorges, and moraines. Overall, the trekkers have to be physically and mentally ready for Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes Trek.

Our professional and experienced crew members will assist you during the trek and push you to finish the journey. They'll help you with motivation and become your friend.

Altitude Sickness during the trek

To best prepare for altitude sickness while trekking in the Himalayas is by making sure your itinerary has rest days, and you drink at least 2 liters of water every day. If you don't know what altitude sickness is, then it is an illness travelers face because their body sees a drastic change in elevation.

Altitude sickness is not something you should super worry about. With proper precautions and measures, one can recover from the symptoms in a day or two. Do not consume anything like alcohol, smoke, etc that can dehydrate your body. Eat fresh healthy food and get ample sleep.

Some of the early symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, nausea, insomnia, difficulty in breathing, no appetite, etc.

Best time to do EBC and Gokyo Lakes trek

You can trek to EBC and Gokyo Lakes in spring - March to April and autumn - October to November. These are the most preferred months of this trek because of the incredible Himalayan landscape and moderate climate. Also, the weather remains stable, so the flights between Lukla and Kathmandu have less chance to delay/cancel.

The trail blooms with a range of flora and thrives with seasonal birds/wildlife. Similarly, the temperature ranges between 18°C to 5°C. Trekkers from all around the world hit the trail to several destinations in the Khumbu region.

Food & Drinks

The food and drink option during this trek is fantastic. At some places, like Lukla, Namche Bazaar, and Tengboche, you can even get pizza, brewed coffee, steak, etc. The most general and delicious meal option is dal bhat served with veggies & pickles. You can also add up veg/non-veg curry. Apart from this, other dishes like noodles, momo, sandwich, chapati, thenduk, thukpa, pasta, porridge, soup, french fries, etc are available too.

For drinks, you can get soft beverages, tea, coffee, etc. Beer is sold in most parts of the trial too, however we don't recommend having it if you are ascending because it will dehydrate your body and make you vulnerable to altitude sickness.

The accommodation for Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes Trek is the lodge. We book rooms in the lodges along the way in advance to make sure our guests can sleep comfortably while trekking.
